Many of us develop skill on our own. I learned to ride bikes on my own when I was 8 years old. I learned to ride cars on my own - I had someone on my side as a safety reason. There are many things like this, we can learn on our own. However, we will miss a perfection or elegance if we don’t have a good mentor on side who can help us to do things to it’s perfection. As an example, although I drive cars nicely, the defensive driving course that I attended made me a better driver. It really helps us if we have some education on top of what we have learned ourselves.
This is true for table tennis also. In clubs, when I see newbies playing table tennis, I try to give them some advises. I try to show them the effective way to make strokes, how to respond to spin to name few. There comes a time when we have to take the skill that we learned on our own to the next level. That’s where the coaches can help us. The USATT which is the organization of table tennis in America have certified coaches. These coaches can take your game to the next level. They will charge an amount between $25 to $80 based on their skill level and demands.
I have many coaches who have coached me - Chen Weixing, Dan Seemiller to name few. Unless you read the USATT magazine regularly, it is hard to find the details of the coaching. I though to help you with some information.
Dan Seemiller Camp:

Texas Wesleyan Camp:
