I don’t know both the players in the video. However, I send a e-thanks to both the guys for publishing such a good demo.

I’m going to focus on the long pips player – he is in the orange color shirt. He uses the famous TSP Curl p1r long pips. The TSP Curl P1R comes in four different versions. The long pips player in the video uses 0.6 mm version. Also notice the color of the rubber which is red.

The TSP Curl P1R he uses on a Waldner Dotec Allround blade. The Waldner Dotec balsa hinoki is an excellent blade for top spin game. It has soft feeling. It is very apt for pips rubbers. The head is not wider like other defensive blades, that’s what pips players dont like about that blade. The blade is faster. The player uses the blade with good skills.

You can start focusing on the video at minute 0:45.

Blocking (0:45 to 2:20)

This is a good demonstration of blocking the top spin with long pips. The angle of the blade is more open. The long pips take all the speed out at the impact of the ball. The ball shoots out with lesser speed. The loop angle is higher. The higher angle gives pressure to the opponents to loop, and keep the opponents from pushing.

Hitting (2:20 – 5:10)

This is a very rare technique long pips defensive player uses. At the highest level of play, it is not necessary for a defender to attack that way. But it is a good weapon for long pips player to use.

The stroke is very similar to inverted. The racket angle is between open and little closed. The technique to apply here comes in two steps. In the first step, the incoming ball needs to be stopped. In the second step the racket needs to be accelerated forward to throw the ball over the net.

The hitting ability comes at the expense of the blade also. The blade the player uses has balsa core and this can adds speed to the hit. It may be hard to do such strokes with defensive blades.

Chopping (5:10 – 7:45)

The player exhibits very good skill of cutting the ball. He is very active in his strokes. He reads the spin very well, and chop accordingly. He cuts the ball infront of his body.

Suprise Attack (7:15)

This is a good tactic being used by both classic and modern defenders. The defender hits back when his offensive opponent retracts.

Hit (7:38 )

The stroke is to hit low spin balls.

Short game with long pips (7:45 – 9:14)

This is an excellent demo of making the game short and winning. Immediately after the serve, the pips player diverts the ball to areas where the opponent does not jump to loop easily.

I know you would be tempted to try this combination. I personally like this combination. Here are few facts you have to consider if you would like to try this combination. (1) The long pips player in the video is an active defender. He takes all the opportunities to attack when his opponent goes defensive. He is very active in front of the table. Unless you can’t be active like him, the combination of blade and the rubber becomes a disastrous. You should have skills to handle the under spin balls your opponents return to you. The (2) TSP Curl p1r can reverse the underspin pretty well, so your opponent can punish you easily.

Thanks for using our training vid. Actually I’m a short pip player ( now back to BTY Raystorm 1,7mm , red BH ). The Curl P1 R was fascinating me though. We are playing in the 4th league in Austria.
My training partner is Helmut Gietler !
