I like Butterfly Tenergy 25 among the three Butterfly Tenergy series rubbers – Tenergy 05, Tenergy 25 and Tenergy 64. It has more control, less speed in a high speed rally, mid-distance to close to the table game and it’s cut ability. I love power spinning with Butterfly Tenergy 25 which is always my favorite counter looping stroke. Unlike Butterfly Tenergy 05 or Tenergy 64, the ball rests on the Tenergy 25 topsheet a little more milliseconds.

I have tried Butterfly Tenergy 25 on various blades. I have tried it on XIOM Strato, XIOM Speed, TSP Yanagi, TSP Reflex 50 Offense, Dr.Neubauer Combination Effect, Re-Impact custom and Borko & Sons custom blades. My overall feeling is that the Butterfly Tenergy 25 works well with any type of blade unlike Tenergy 05. I liked it better with softer blades made of balsa. The Tenergy 25 on my custom Borko & Sons custom blade has not given me much happiness while serving.

On all the Tenergy rubbers, I see the same sponge. The topsheet of Butterfly Tenergy 05 can rotate the ball more compared to Butterfly Tenergy 25. Unless you get the Tenergy 25 on a carbon or balsa blade, it is hard to get good spin out of soft contact on its top sheet. I had to swing and cut the ball hard to generate good spin on my blade. This may due to its topsheet little harder than the Tenergy 05.

The migration path the players have chosen is to Butterfly Tenergy 64 from Butterfly Tenergy 05. The Butterfly Tenergy 25 did not offer much for the top spin players. I have noticed this with players who have fixed grip during looping. The variety strokes players who use their wrist in any angle are benefited by Tenergy 25. The pips structure of Tenergy 25 generate multi-dimensional throw, so it offers good control for the close to the table players. This was something hard to do with Tenergy 05 - the ball takes straight line path irrespective of how hard you try.

The topspin loopers who spin the ball from below the table with a 45 degree contact toward the forehead will suffer with Tenergy 25 – look at the loop strokes of Timo Boll. The Tenergy 25 requires you to put effort in spinning below the table level balls. The choppers can take advantage of this to cut the ball from the floor level to the other side – cutting requires good forward motion depends on where the player is from the table.

There is good dwell time at impact. This adds more control for the controlled top spin loopers. The hitters also love Tenergy 25 – good arm speed is required if the player is away from the table.

The Butterfly Tenergy 25 is a grippy rubber. I would like to compare Tenergy 25 to DHS Hurricane 3 with 5 to 6 layers of speed glue. I was not satisfied by it’s click sound. I have felt good spin during the serve in first one week. The spin at soft contact degraded slowly. However I did not notice much difference at a high speed rally.

The Butterfly Tenergy 25 has medium to high loop angle over the net - in the range of Tenergy 05. These angles are highly controllable unlike Tenergy 05. The ball has more kick than Tenergy 05 after hitting the table. It has a very unpredictable jump after the ball hits the table. To take advantage of this, the player to spin the ball.

I mentioned Tenergy 25 has less speed in a high speed rally. The Tenergy 25 asks the players how far it should rebound in a high speed rally. The player can retreat or can be aggressive. The Tenergy 25 adds more speed to its ball only if the player accelerates it. That’s where Tenergy 25 offers more opportunities for the players.

The Butterfly Tenergy rubbers are Japanese rubbers. They use sponge technology to add speed and spin.

Who should use Tenergy 05?

The Tenergy 05 suits players who play 80 to 90% top spin in their game. They play quick game and finish the point fast. They need instant spin generation of the rubber without their own effort in a high speed rally.

Who should use Tenergy 25?

Allround players who play variety strokes - equal forward rotation and reverse rotation. They prefer to spin the ball themselves in a high speed rally.

Who should use Tenergy 64?

The Tenergy 05 style players who want more speed, less loop angle over the table.
